Some of my petty pedantry and why it doesn't matter
I already have at least one of these on this blog (which incidentally is my most
popular post).
Why it doesn’t really matter: p<2.2e-16 is pretty significant!
em-dashes and hyphens
Using a hyphen between clauses-like this-looks tacky. Use these resplendent em-dashes–like this–instead.
It’s so easy to do, just type two hyphens --
or Alt-hyphen.
Why it doesn’t really matter: what’s a few pixels between friends.
A species name split over two rows (non-breaking space)
S. pnuemoniae
or
S.
pneumoniae
Sometimes your genus and species can get cruelly separated from one another by a vicious line break, how horrible.
Our friend, the non-breaking space keeps these natural fellows atomic. Alt-space puts one in, or in $\LaTeX{}$ we can do something much more fun in the preamble:
% Define in glossary
\newacronym[first={\textit{Streptococcus pneumoniae}}]{sp}{\textit{S.~pneumoniae}}{\textit{Streptococcus pneumoniae}}
% Use in text
\gls{sp} is often misspelled (by me) as _Streptococcus penumoniae_
(Also known as nbsp, which you have probably seen in some html at some point.)
Why it doesn’t really matter: Usually gets sorted out when properly typeset. Species aren’t real anyway.
Incorrect rounding
17.8 million says the slide, 17 million says the speaker.
Why it doesn’t really matter: Maybe they are rounding to the nearest 17.
